GM $1 Million Donation

General Motors Powers Up Their Commitment to Literacy

In February 2020, GM became a top single funder of Beyond Basics’ “Be the Solution” campaign with its $1 million contribution to help eradicate illiteracy among Detroit Public School Community District high school students.

“Beyond Basics delivers outstanding results that are real, measurable, and impactful.”

Mark Reuss, President, General Motors

GM support provided 500 high schoolers in DPSCD with immediate access to intensive, one-on-one reading intervention with the goal of unlocking the endless possibilities of literacy.

Mark Reuss states,“At General Motors, we believe investing in Detroit’s children and families is an investment in the future – for them and for all of us residing in southeast Michigan. Our team is proud to support Beyond Basics’ ambitious mission, and we encourage other companies to do the same as we work together to revitalize the city.”

With (their) most recent contribution, GM demonstrates a dedication to the bright minds and stellar tomorrows of Detroit’s high school students. Through literacy and the work of Beyond Basics, the company is helping break a multi-generational cycle of poverty and despair.

We are beyond grateful.

But this isn’t the first time GM has bolstered this organization’s mission. In 2018, after supporting us in the schools for a few year they helped open Beyond Basics’ first physical location in the city at the Durfee Innovation Society, located next to Central High School. Because of the relationships we have built with families at the literacy center, we were able to launch a COVID Family Relief Fund and support those in need during the pandemic.
