DETROIT, March 10, 2023 – On Friday, March 3, literacy nonprofit Beyond Basics kicked off National Reading Month by hosting their Coming Together for Children Annual Eventat the Detroit Athletic Club. Hundreds of dedicated donors and supporters celebrated the promise and possibility that Beyond Basics has given to its students since its founding.

This diverse group of women are leaders in service and their communities. They utilize their skills in leadership, finance, human resources, human service, fundraising, community development and more to champion their nonprofit’s mission and be fiscal stewards of donor funds.
Since kindergarten, high school students have shown up to school every day ready to learn, and we have failed them (“New Graduates’ ACT Scores Hit a 30-Year Low,” Oct. 12, 2022). According to 2022 ACT scores, only 41 percent of students are college-ready in reading. ACT CEO Janet Goodwin is correct when she says test performance is evidence of “longtime systemic failures.”
Across our great state, students who struggle to read are showing up to school each and every day — the child who suddenly excuses himself when called upon to read aloud, and another whose antics divert from the shame she won't let anyone see.
If there is any silver lining, it is that the students who have recently fallen behind are shining a light on those who have been reading below grade level for decades. We refer to these students as falling into the “literacy gap. In 47 states, only 40 percent of eighth graders are reading proficiently, according to the NAEP (nationsreportcard.gov). Fortunately, there is a solution.

Roughly 5,650 Michigan students received reading scores low enough that they could be required to repeat third grade, according to a new report from Michigan State University’s Education Policy Innovation Collaborative (EPIC), the strategic research partner of the Department of Education and local school districts in Michigan.
A recent editorial asks how Michigan can improve its education performance, and says a good start is to “eliminate the elected state Board of Education" ("To fix schools, first scrap state ed board," June 10, 2022).
