Beyond Basics & The NFL Draft
Beyond Basics Partners with the NFL Draft for a One-of-a-Kind Community Celebration
At this literacy event, Beyond Basics proudly joined the 2024 NFL Draft festivities with a meaningful presence in the DCLEATED public art installation. Our custom cleat, designed by Detroit artist Jennifer Maples, stood proudly outside the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, highlighting the city’s spirit and creative talent. The cleats were auctioned off to support local causes—including Beyond Basics—and the event gave our students a chance to participate in art activities, experience the excitement of the draft, and showcase their own work inspired by the NFL. A celebration of literacy, creativity, and community pride, this partnership brought Detroit’s youth to the center of it all.
NFL Social Justice Town Hall: A Call to Action
Beyond Basics proudly took part in the NFL Social Justice Town Hall at the Horatio Williams Foundation, where important conversations unfolded around the systemic challenges facing today’s youth. The event addressed critical issues like literacy gaps, economic inequality, and educational barriers that disproportionately affect minority communities. Our participation helped shine a light on the urgent need for equitable access to resources and opportunities—especially through literacy.
Drafting Change: Beyond Basics Chosen as Legacy Partner
Beyond Basics was honored to take part in the Detroit Sports Commission’s Community Impact Draft at the Corner Ballpark. As one of two nonprofits selected to receive a nearly $2 million Living Legacy Donation tied to the 2024 NFL Draft, Beyond Basics was chosen for our commitment to literacy and student success. This initiative was made possible by generous support from Detroit’s civic and corporate leaders and aims to leave a lasting impact on local youth.
