Beyond Basics & The NFL Draft

  • BEYOND BASICS & THE NFL DRAFT

2024 NEXUS NETWORK DRAFT PARTY

Beyond Basics was thrilled to attend the draft party hosted by the Nexus Network! Thank you to everyone who joined us. A portion of the funds raised will benefit Beyond Basics, helping us continue our mission to empower students through literacy. We had the pleasure of meeting amazing individuals from all corners of the globe and shared the impactful work we do and the students we serve.

NFL SOCIAL JUSTICE TOWN HALL

Beyond Basics participated in the NFL Social Justice Town Hall held at the Horatio Williams Foundation. The discussion revolved around various social injustices, including literacy, economic disparities and educational inequalities that hinder the progress of minority youth.

DETROIT SPORTS COMMISSION COMMUNITY IMPACT DRAFT

Our team joined the Detroit Sports Commission’s Community Impact Draft at the Corner Ballpark to mark the beginning of the NFL Draft in Detroit. We were part of a group of Metro Detroit nonprofits and communities set to benefit from a Living Legacy Donation of nearly $2 million, raised in connection with the draft.

After significant research, discussion, and listening sessions to identify community priorities, Beyond Basics and Project Play were selected as the legacy initiative’s local non-profit partners by a committee of community leaders from local education, non-profit, foundation and youth sports organizations.

The 2024 NFL Draft and the community engagement legacy initiative is made possible through the generous support of the local civic, corporate, and philanthropic community.  Supporters include Visit Detroit, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Rocket Mortgage, General Motors Foundation, Flagstar Bank, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, DTE Energy, Skillman Foundation, Huntington Bank, Penske Corporation, and PNC Bank.

BEYOND BASICS & DECLEATED PUBLIC ART INSTILLATION

Beyond Basics is honored to be a part of the DCLEATED project. Our cleat, designed by local artist Jennifer Maples, can be found outside of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, next to the beautiful The Spirit of Detroit. We are thrilled to be located near such historic Detroit landmarks.

This project showcases Detroit’s creativity while raising awareness and support for our community. The cleats will be auctioned off online to benefit the charity chosen by each artist. The online auction will close at 11:30 p.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024.

DETROIT SPORTS COMMISSION LEGACY GRANT RECIPIENT

After significant research, discussion, and listening sessions to identify community priorities, Beyond Basics and Project Play were selected as the legacy initiative’s local non-profit partners by a committee of community leaders from local education, non-profit, foundation and youth sports organizations.
